Mack's Profile |
I was born in the south part of Kyoto Prefecture
on 4th June 1942. I have my wife named
Miyoko, who teaches Mathematics at Kogakkan
High School, and two sons who have left our
house. I am an elderly teacher at Kogakkan
University, and a scholar who has specialized
in English literature since 1962 when I entered
Kansai University. I don't drink and smoke.
It is not because I was taken dangerously
ill at the age of 29, and have refused to
drink and smoke to take good care of myself,
but because there is a sad fact that my body
has refused to do so since my school days.
It is 24 years since I got a full-time job
at Kogakkan University. As a lot of senior
members retired under the age limit, I am
becoming an old-timer. At first I was much
surprised to see a lot of wooden classrooms
and wooden offices which had been the buildings
of Kuratayama Junior High School. But as
they were replaced by the new concrete buildings
gradually, I only can imagine the old picture
of our university in my mind now: it means
that I am getting older and older.
Professor Kayoko Nishiyama who teaches Music
got a full-time job in the same year when
I got it. Besides late professor Isao Nishiyama,
a senior member, was very famous in the campus.
As the surname of Nishiyama consisted of
three persons, students distinguished us,
calling her "Nishiyama of Music,"
and him "Merciful Nishiyama," and
me "Devilish Nishiyama." When
he and I called each other "Mr. Nishiyama"
in a taxi, a taxi driver said to us, "Excuse
me. Who is the devilish Nishiyama?"
I knew that he often heard students call
me so in the taxi. But, is it due to the
result of the passage of time that the devilish
Nishiyama is changing into the merciful Nishiyama?
We always have a lot of students who are
very weak in English at Kogakkan University. As the students who are allergic to English
seem to call me a devilish teacher, I think
that we who teach foreign languages cannot
but admit such an unfavorable reputation
as our fate. And I have made a point of
not producing a lot of students who are good
at English, but building up their attitudes
to study at our university since I got a
full-time job here, for one cannot expect
a good result if one cannot establish one's
concrete attitude to study any subject at
a university, or to finish any kind of work
in one's real life.
We changed the place to live in twice in Ise, and it
has passed 11 years since I moved to the
precinct of Ise Grand Shrine (Geku) which
is situated in the south-east of it. At
first I thought this was a place for peaceful
living, for surroundings were very good. But
I have been much irritated for these several
years. It is because I am afflicted with
a lot of troubles and nuisances which our
neighbors and surroundings are giving me.
As the trees on the next small mountain
grow bigger and bigger, their shadows don't
make my satsuki bonsai in my garden receive
the sunshine till later and later in the
morning in winter. Therefore I would like
to move to another place again. But it
is a great pity that we don't have a lot
of money to build a new house.
