Araki \ Part 3

I came home on May 21st from the Netherlands. And my wife has had a serious disease in the brain. She couldnft eat foods because of dysphagia that a small stop of blood stream in the artery of cerebellum caused. Though she continued to vomit, now she can eat soft foods after staying in the hospital for two weeks. Since then I have been her feet because she cannot drive her car and ride the bicycle. Therefore I have been so busy and tired because of a lot of work that I couldnft renew the homepage.

We entered into the rainy season in Ise on June 5th. And fortunately I finished pruning 247 satsuki trees in the pots on June 25th and about 180 in the gardens of new and old houses on July 2nd because we didnft have a lot of rainy days. But since it continues to rain since yesterday afternoon and will stop raining after the 4th big typhoon will pass our district on 10th, I could renew the homepage though I cannot remove the seeds of satsuki trees in the nursery.

I would like to introduce two middle class (chuhin) trees of Hakurin and Kozan which were dug out from the nursery on March 15th and planted in the bonsai pots on 22nd after I had washed the roots of them. Though such trees were 12 as a group, I reduced the number of them into 8 because their trunks and branches have grown large and the spaces between them were much narrower.

Section 1. Hakurin

I paid 90,000 yen for this Hakurin, 3 other Hakurin and 2 Korin at Mozuen, in Sakai city, Osaka prefecture in January 1997, and planted them in the nursery though they were expensive good materials for shohin. Though their trunks werenft thick when I bought them, they have grown large rapidly.

About 12 years ago when we built the new house in the new land, almost all trees in the nursery were transplanted. Since then they havenft been transplanted, I think it was a good timing that I dug up 12 trees, transplanted 8 trees and planted 4 trees in the pots.

A. After pruning in the nursery

I pruned this Hakurin in the nursery on March 8th so drastically that you can see the basic figure on the photo well. The second branch is so thick now that the tree may look clumsy. Though I think I should have removed all thick branches when I planted them in the nursery, I couldnft do so because I couldnft imagine that these 6 trees would grow so large in 10 years, that is, I didnft have any experiences of growing such trees in the nursery for a long years. Therefore I had to remove some thick branches from their trunks several years ago.

B. The nebari (rootage)

Since this tree had a good rootage (nebari) when I bought it, I planted it in the nursery without arranging the roots. And since it has been planted in Kanuma soil since the sapling, it was very easy to remove the soil with a jet of water. As I thought, it had a good nebari except some crossed roots which I had to remove.

C. The bottom of rootage

Though you can see some cut ends of thick roots on the bottom of rootage, it is very good that there are a lot of spaces between the roots and the thick roots have so many thin roots that I can hope that it will recover the health and have a lot of shoots soon.

D. After washing roots.

You can see the beautiful nebari. I think it has an ideal nebari because it is very important that water sinks down with air when water is given. If the good nebari hadnft been arranged when the tree was a young tree, it wouldnft have a good nebari when it grew a large-trunked tree.

E. This is the whole figure of Hakurin which is seen from the front.

When I planted this tree in this bonsai pot, it looks a little bit beautiful though the second branch is very large. I think it is because the pot is suitable for it. Fortunately I have some middle good bonsai pots which I bought about 30 years ago though they were very expensive. Though now I could buy it for much cheaper price, it is unlucky that we donft have any good garden shops in Ise where a lot of good bonsai pots are sold. But I think I have a problem because this tree is Hakurin. Perhaps if the colour of pot is darker, it may be very suitable for the variety.

The height is 37 cm. The trunk circumference is 38 cm. The pot is 39 x 32 x 12 cm. The photo was taken on March 22nd, 2014.

Section 2. Kozan

I paid 3,000 yen for this Kozan, Nikko and Kobai no kagayaki at Takagiengei in Kanuma city in November 1993, to plant them in the nursery. They were very cheap because they were placed in the corner of garden. And they were so poor that they had only a few branches. But I hoped that I would be able to grow them strongly if I planted them in the nursery. And this Kozan is the best of the three.

A. After pruning in the nursery

The first branch of this Kozan is so thick that it looks a little bit clumsy. It was so poor that I could not remove it when I planted it in the nursery. And I could not imagine that it would grow very large. Therefore when I pruned it in March, I had to remove a thick branch from it and cut it short lest it should grow larger.

B. The rootage after washing this Kozan with a jet water

Judging from the nebari after washing the root swith a jet water, it doesnft seem to have a good nebari because it is very thick. At first I cut it into halves.

C. The bottom of rootage

At first I removed three large vertical roots under the bottom of trunk and arranged the roots to make it have a good nebari. Though the nebari isnft bad, it isnft very good. It is because it didnft have a very good nebari when I planted it in the nursery. Therefore it is most natural that a young tree should have a good nebari as a first condition, if you would like to make a good satsuki bonsai.

D. After washing roots of Kozan

E. This is the whole figure of Kozan which is seen from the front.

When I planted this tree in this bonsai pot, it looks a little bit beautiful though the first branch is very large. I think it is because the pot is suitable for it. Fortunately I thought it better of the middle bonsai pots which I had bought about 30 years ago though they had been very expensive.

In respect of a colour of pot, I think this colour of the pot is considerably suitable for the single-coloured flower of Kozan.

The height is 39 cm. The trunk circumference is 42 cm. The pot is 43 x 32 x 12 cm. The photo was taken on March 22nd, 2014.

To be continued.
